THIRD ANNUAL RICE FEST ANNOUNCES ENTERTAINMENT, ACTIVITIES

HONOLULU, HI (August 29, 2012) – Join Hawaii’s rice lovers for the 3rd Annual Rice Fest, sponsored by Common Grains, which will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Ward Centers.

Admission is FREE, and the day will be packed full of activities, entertainment and ‘ono dishes celebrating a food that is a cultural cornerstone to so many in Hawaii.

One of the main highlights of Rice Fest is the building of an even bigger version of what last year won the Guinness Book of World Records title for the WORLD’S LARGEST SPAM MUSUBI. Last year’s version used 320 cups of rice, 26 cans of spam and more than 120 sheets of nori, and weighed in at 286 pounds.

“Getting our name in the global record books last year was a pretty exciting thing, and we’re going to surpass our own record on September 29,” said Ed Sugimoto, founder and organizer of Rice Fest. “September is National Rice Month, and it just made sense to create and break the record here, where both rice and SPAM are such regular staples. We’d like to keep the record in Hawaii.”

In addition to the monster musubi, Rice Fest this year will feature live entertainment by Jody Kamisato and Ukulele Hale, Taiko Drumming by Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko and more, plus professional chef demonstrations, a scavenger hunt for all ages and two contests: Da SPAM Musubi Eating Contest and “Riceipe” Cooking Contest. Rice Fest will also be accepting your generous rice donations for Lanakila Pacific’s “Meals on Wheels” nonprofit volunteer-run program, Hawaii’s only island-wide meal service for needy seniors.

Rice Fest is organized by HPELive and VH07V and proudly sponsored by Common Grains. Common Grains is a Japanese food and culture project presented by the Japan Rice and Rice Products export promotion association. The project is curated by Sonoko Sakai, a Los Angeles based Japanese food and culture educator.
