WHO: 2011 Hawaii Rice Fest

WHAT: Set Guinness World Record™ for Largest SPAM® Musubi

WHEN: Sunday, September 11, Construction 11:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m., Weigh-in 5:00 p.m.

WHERE: Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park

Media are invited to photograph the first-of-its-kind competition to set the Guinness World Record™ for the largest SPAM® Musubi taking place Sunday, September 11, at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park. Volunteers will start making the SPAM® Musubi starting at 11:00 a.m. and the giant musubi, expected to weigh in at more than 200 pounds, will be moved to the stage and weighed at 5:00 p.m. Volunteers will use 320 cups of rice, 26 cans of SPAM® cut into 10 slices each and more than 120 sheets of nori to set the record.

The making of the Guinness World Record™ is all part of Hawai‘i’s second annual Rice Festival, Sunday, September 11 at Magic Island in Ala Moana Beach Park from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Presented by HPELive, the day will feature everything rice, from eating it, to cooking it, to learning about its rich heritage.

Family fun festivities include celebrity and chef cooking demonstrations, a “rice-ipe” cook-off, music and entertainment, Keiki Zone, SPAM® Musubi eating contest, and an appearance by Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, the author of The Hawai‘i Book of Rice, whose recipes will be featured in the cook-offs, and much more.

HPELive is also partnering with 29 participating credit unions statewide, the Hawai‘i Foodbank and Lanakila Meals on Wheels to help the needy by setting up an official donation site at the Rice Fest. Please bring bags of rice to donate!

Participating vendors include Snow Factory, Island Fruits, Kat’s Sushi, Hawaiian Style Chili Co., Taste & See Delights, Sam’s Kitchen, Ono Pops, Raised on Rice, Project Grad, Lei Crystal Tattoos, Douglas Odani da Balloon Twister and more.

The Second Annual Rice Fest is being held Sunday, September 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park.
